In recent weeks we have been warned on several occasions that the world may be hit by a major food shortage by the year 2050. Food prices may double and as a result even more people may be hungrier in that year than in 2011. It is not easy for a non expert to judge whether or not those warnings are well founded but, even if there is only a minor worsening in the situation there will still be a lot of hungry people. The irony is that there is no need for such hunger. The world could produce more food but that would require more investment in agriculture and the food industry. Such a change of policy would challenge the interests of certain powerful groups and individuals. The hungry may continue to be hungry.

Both of today's readings and the life and death of Lawrence himself show us that investment is essential in the life of the spirit too. The readings assure us that the investment will be very productive if we invest in the active and demanding life of grace, of the love of God and our neighbour the results are guaranteed. The investment is gilt edged. There will be benefits for ourselves and especially for others. The person who gives and the person who receives will be blessed. We have sure and powerful backers God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our Lady and St. Lawrence will keep us steady. St.Paul will glow with joy when he sees us cheerfully giving of our time and energy for the sake of others.

Dear Jesus, teach me to be generous. Teach me to give and not to count the cost.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
