In the first chapter of St John's Gospel, it is noteworthy that those who encountered Jesus went immediately to invite others to come to him. Thus Andrew went to find his brother Peter and, though it is not entirely certain, possibly the other disciple with him, John, went also to find his brother James. Thus John indirectly affirms the Synoptic account: the first four disciples were Andrew, Peter, John and James. Philip also went to find his friend Nathanael, who seems to have been surnamed Bartholomew.

Long before they were sent to the world as apostles, these men felt the urge to bring people to Jesus. They still had much to learn about Jesus, and much to learn from him. They had many experiences ahead of them which they could not have dreamed of, especially the Passion, Death and Resurrection of this man, Jesus of Nazareth, whom they encountered for the first time. Yet even at this very initial stage, the attraction of Jesus was so powerful that they could only respond by sharing their experience. The small group of disciples was missionary from the beginning.

Lord Jesus, may we experience the attraction and excitement You engendered in these first disciples, so that we too may have the courage to bring Your Gospel to others.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
