As we come today to the end of the Letter to the Hebrews, there are some pieces of advice which we could do well to think about for our own lives.

  • To love each other like brothers and sisters, a central teaching of Jesus himself. "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." If this is the basis of all we do, we cannot do wrong.
  • Welcome strangers. As the saying has it: "A visitor comes; Christ comes." He is especially to be found among those in need.
  • Remember those who are in prison, especially those unjustly imprisoned and the victims of religious persecution. "I was in prison and you visited me."
  • Remember all the victims of injustice, especially at the hands of governments.
  • l Respect the marriages of others and maintain the fidelity of one's own. Fornication and adultery should not be found among Christians.
  • Remove material greed from our lives and be content with what we really need. Their lives and be content with what they have. As Jesus said: "Life does not consist in abundance of possessions" or St Paul: "I have learnt to be content with what I have."
  • Finally, there is a call to respect those who brought the Word of God to us.
  • These instructions are just as relevant for us today as they were for the 'Hebrews'.

Love one another as I have loved you.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
