Going on a journey - this is the topic common to both the First Reading and the Gospel passages of today.

One of the journeys is undertaken with hope, the hope of a joyous re-union with a long-lost son. Yet this hope is dulled by trepidation and anxiety. Jacob, as a God-fearing man, was deeply concerned that he might not be doing God's will by leaving the land of God's promise. However, his fears are allayed when God Himself appears to him in a vision and reassures him, telling him that this journey was part of His long-term plans for him. So this journey goes on and ends in a moving re-union with Joseph, his favourite and long-lost son.

The other journey we read about today is yet to be undertaken. We see it in the stage of preparation, and it is clearly also to be a journey of hope, the hope of bringing the good news of their salvation to the people the disciples will encounter as they go from town to town. Apprehension and anxiety also accompany this hope. Jesus, who sends out the Twelve, does not water down nor dissembles about the perilous problems and persecution that will face them on this journey. However, just as Jacob was told that "I myself will go down to Egypt with you..." (Gen:46:4-5), Jesus encourages them by saying "...do not worry...the Spirit of Your Father will be speaking in you." (Mt.10:20), and He promises them a joyful end to their mission.

Lord, as we journey with difficulty through life, we trust that Your presence is with us always. Amen.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christ may ease the physical and spiritual sufferings of those who are sick with AIDS, especially in the poorest countries.
