From ancient times, the chair has been a symbol of teaching authority. Today we celebrate Christ's selection of Peter to sit in Christ's place of teaching and authority for the Church.

Peter is called to lead the Church not out of compulsion, but with a spirit of willingness. He is not to guide the Church with great force, but with great care. This is the example that Christ has given us. A shepherd, a pastor has compassion for the needs and struggles of the flock. Peter is to exercise his teaching authority, to lead us to what is good and true and beautiful, in light of these needs.

Jesus does not select the most educated disciple for this role - Peter was a fisherman. Jesus does not pick the most loyal disciple - Peter denied Jesus three times. Jesus chooses someone who is open to God's voice and revelation in his life.

Today we hear that it is God who revealed to Peter that Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God. Ultimately, this feast celebrates not Peter's goodness, but God's revelation to us through Peter and through the leaders of the Church who have succeeded him.

We are invited to trust in what God reveals. There is both challenge and great life in this.

Lord, generously bless all leaders of the Church, especially the Pope. May they shepherd and care for Your flock with Your love.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
