People don't like suffering. In fact, we view it as an evil and our goal is to eliminate suffering in the world. Then why do we 'celebrate' the suffering of Good Friday? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah is an unknown figure - perhaps a symbol of Israel - but his suffering was on behalf of the nation. He suffered physically - and with degradation and humiliation - so that others would not have to. He was the model or image of Jesus, who likewise suffered to save others. Hebrews assures us that Jesus had to learn obedience through suffering and he did not rejoice in what he had to undergo, but he wanted above all to do the will of the Father. Our meditation on the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus should not concentrate as much on the suffering as on the reason - a love more profound and infinite than we can ever imagine. It was the intent and meaning that gave his suffering its value. As disciples of Jesus, we seek to follow in his footsteps. We don't seek suffering for its own sake - it should never be seen as some sort of self-punishment. Christian suffering is not a form of spiritual self-indulgence. It should always be for the good of others. Most of us will not be called upon to suffer in such a severe form. But anytime that we give of ourselves and are willing to put the needs of others first, we are walking in the footsteps of the Master. On this Good Friday, let us meditate on the supreme love of Jesus and ask to be led on a similar path.

Lord, help me to put others first.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
