The first reading describes how Yahweh calls Jonah the second time. This time Jonah makes no objection. On reaching Nineveh, Jonah travels three days through the city proclaiming a message of destruction. The response of the Ninevites is immediate. They “turned from their evil way…”

The word “turn” is a key word in the writings of the prophets. If the people “turn,” Yahweh “repents” (see Joel 2: 12-14). These two words merge into the concept of repentance, which in the Gospels, is demanded of those who would belong to the kingdom of God.

Indeed, it is with a call to repentance that Jesus begins his ministry. Although Jesus brings the good news of God that “This is the time of fulfilment”, he immediately links it with an equally important call for a radical response. “Therefore, repent, and believe in the gospel”.

In a few words of Jesus, Mark summarises the gospel message of Jesus: the very power of God is available to those who open themselves to Jesus. The effect of Jesus preaching is immediate. When Jesus says “Come, follow me” to the brothers Simon and Andrew, James and John, they turn from their family and work as fishermen and follow him.

God constantly calls his people to repent. The people of Nineveh “turn” from evil ways and return to God. The brothers Simon and Andrew, James and John “turn” from their family and livelihood to follow Jesus. What about you? When was the last time you “turned”?

Lord, help me repent and believe in the Gospel.
