"Famine had gripped the whole world". This statement from the book of Genesis, with a few adaptations, could easily apply to our modern world - Terrorism has gripped the whole world, selfishness has gripped the whole world, fear has gripped the whole world. Or, as St John stated in his First Letter (1Jn 5:19): "The whole world is lying in the power of the evil one. Where shall we find a wise man like Joseph to help us to restore our world to peace and harmony, justice and truth?" Many look with great hope to Pope Francis as such a wise man. No matter how much great good that Francis or any other wise "Joseph" may do, we as individuals, especially as Christians, must never forget that the reformation of the world begins with the reformation of our own heart and life. The Chinese Classic, The Great Learning taught us centuries ago that one's own heart must be well ordered and pure if one is to help one's family to be well ordered, and it is only when the family is well-ordered that the state, the nation, can be well ordered.

Father in Heaven, You are the Lord of history. Send us wise leaders and guides. To guide our footsteps in the pathways of peace and joy, truth and true humanity.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
