The readings today put forward two images of Christian discipleship. In the first reading, Paul uses the image of an "earthenware jar" to symbolise his calling as a disciple. He does this to answer those who claim that he is unworthy to carry the title of ‘apostle'. To Paul, discipleship is not about how worthy someone is in terms of qualification, rank or character. It is about being totally dependent on God's power.

Such a discipleship reflects the witness of Jesus as the image of God manifest in his sufferings on the cross. Jesus is the image of God, and, through the cross, Jesus revealed the power and wisdom of God. In sharing about his own weakness and suffering, Paul asserts that his ministry is rooted in God's, and not on his own power,

The Gospel passage presents us another image of discipleship. The mother of John and James asks Jesus that her sons be given the two best seats in the coming kingdom. When the other disciples heard about it, they expressed their unhappiness towards James and John. After all, they have the right to this privilege as well. This leads to Jesus reminding them that the way of leadership in his community is about serving others, and not about seeking personal glory and riches.

Which image of discipleship prevails in your life? Discipleship as linked to the cross and as such, to suffering and being totally dependent on the power of God? Or is it discipleship linked to position and privileges, seen as ‘rewards' given by God for serving Him?

Lord, help me be an authentic disciple.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
