Several times in the Old Testament barren women play a significant role in humanity's salvation. Hannah murmured her heartfelt prayer to God for a child, especially a son. She promised that if she were granted a son, he would be dedicated to God's service. All she received from Eli the prophet was an insulting accusation of drunkenness. Fortunately, God heard her prayer and the son born to her became the great prophet Samuel. Often those in high places overlook the important role of very ordinary faithful people with all their life struggles in the grand plan of salvation history. Perhaps we are one of them!

The demons were not stupid - they knew exactly who Jesus was and why he had come. In that sense, they were more astute and aware then all of the people in Mark's gospel. They were terrified, for they knew that the end of their power was fast approaching. The words of Jesus were powerful - when he taught, people were stunned - they knew that he was speaking the truth. When he commanded the demons to leave the man, they obeyed. Words spoken from a heart and soul totally in harmony with God carry this sort of power. The closer we are to God in mind, heart, and will, the greater power and authority our words and actions will carry. Words spoken insincerely, untruthfully, ignorantly or from self-interest will lack power and authenticity.

Lord, may my heart and soul be in harmony with You always.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
