Fear is a terrible and destructive thing. It destroys our peace, robs us of our joy, and often leads us to do stupid things. King Ahaz was terrified because Jerusalem was being attacked by her enemies. He was tempted to make a disastrous alliance with other countries to fight his enemies. God spoke to him through the prophet, telling him to trust and to stand fast. The attack would not be successful; God would take care of the nation. Ahaz was not to make alliances or go to war. When we face fearful situations, we need more trust and a sense that we are surrounded by God's love and protection. Above all, we should not let fear take us where we know we shouldn't go.

Poor Chorazin and Bethsaida! Jesus had some very tough words for both these towns. It was not that they were any more sinful than others, but that Jesus had worked great miracles in both towns and they had refused to repent. People often wish that they had proof to strengthen their faith - perhaps a miracle or two! But as Scripture often tells us, for those who are not inclined to faith, miracles mean little and 'proofs' are never enough. Faith is a response of the heart, and faith is strengthened by faith. Let us look for the ways in which God has worked deeds of power in our own lives - perhaps in hidden ways - and respond with gratitude, repentance, and faith.

Lord, deepen my faith.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
