When we have suffered a loss or tragedy, the process of grieving and mourning can help to heal us. The Israelites were threatened with disaster and loss because of their sins, but Ezekiel added something far more painful and serious. He told them that their loss would be severe, but they would be unable to mourn and grieve. In a sense, they would become numb - not a good place to be. Of course, the prophets often used scary and violent language. It was intended to shock people and turn them towards God, but it was not always successful. People become too comfortable and set in their ways.

The rich young man is a good example - he was not sinful, just a bit too comfortable with his life. He was a good man and he observed all the commandments, but he felt that there was something more. He felt rather empty. Jesus challenged him to give up his security and power - for that is what wealth usually is - and become his disciple. The man was stricken and upset and went away very sad. He couldn't bring himself to do it. When we are asked to give up things, it is not because they are bad, but they can distract us from being committed to following the Lord. We risk relying on wealth, power, and possessions rather than God. Jesus calls us to be free, which is another word for discipleship.

Lord, deepen my commitment to You.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
