Some people in Thessalonica didn't work but they still participated in the communal meals, which were provided by the generosity of the community. The writer discouraged freeloading by using the example of Paul and those who travelled with him. They worked hard to pay their own way, so they would not be a burden. No one should live in idleness. Each able-bodied person should earn their own living and contribute to the community. This is true today as well - if we wish to serve Christ, we must serve others and not expect to be served. The concluding blessing with the grace of Christ asserts Christ's lordship over all.

Herod had married his brother's wife, Herodias. Herodias wanted to kill John the Baptist for speaking out against their marriage, but Herod knew John was a holy and righteous man and protected him. When Herodias' daughter danced at Herod's birthday celebration, she was told she could have whatever she wanted; she asked her mother what she should request. Herodias seized the opportunity to have John the Baptist beheaded. Herod faced a real dilemma - he respected John and yet he was afraid to lose face with his guests. Herod allowed his pride to win. He immediately had John killed. How should we make decisions when we face difficult dilemmas? Are we careful whom we ask for advice? Do we take our concerns to the Lord?

Lord, guide me in my decision-making.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
