In his letter, James puts forth the idea that a living and practical faith has to show itself actively in one's actions carried out with humility and wisdom. James then contrasts between wisdom from above and earthbound wisdom, that is, true and false wisdom respectively. Earthly wisdom promotes the self, and is concerned with matters, such as, riches, power and prestige. Wisdom from above is pure and spotless. It builds community, makes peace, is patient and willing to give in to teachers and leaders. In short, true wisdom is about correct behaviour and moral uprightness.

The miracle story of the healing of the possessed boy in Marks' gospel has a very clear and simple message. Anything is possible to one who trusts, and trust is deepened by prayer. Although it is Jesus who heals the boy, it is the father's profession of faith that is held up for us to imitate. Even in the most difficult times, when prayer and trust may seem useless, Jesus invites us to take a step further and pray like the boy's father's faith: "I do believe! Help my unbelief!"

The first reading and gospel passage highlight some important qualities and attitudes of a believer of Jesus: one who is humble, who is filled with the wisdom that comes from God, who builds community, who has sincere faith and who learns to persist and trust even in the most difficult moments. Perhaps, today is a good time for us to examine and ask ourselves whether we are growing in these areas of our life.

Lord, help me grow in wisdom.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
