In the letter to the Hebrews, the writer explains the three qualifications required of a high priest. Firstly, the high priest is chosen from human beings and represents them in the sacrifice he offers. Secondly, he is able to perform his function as a representative because he shares in their human weakness. Thirdly, he is called to this office by God and not by his own choice. Then, the writer shows how Christ, as high priest, meets these qualifications but in reverse order. Firstly, Christ did not assume the office of high priest, but he received it from God. Secondly, Christ is in solidarity with human weakness although he is without sin. Thirdly, Christ carries out his role as the representative of the people for whom as high priest, he offers sacrifice, and becomes the source of salvation for others.

In this way, the sacrifice of Jesus inaugurates a new covenant and replaces an entire old order described in the Old Testament. With Jesus, the kingdom of God is present in his person. As pointed out in the Gospel of Mark, when confronted with the question why his disciples do not fast, Jesus responds by saying, "Why fast while the groom is at the wedding?" In the Old Testament, the image of weddings often refers to the presence of God among his people, and fasting is seen as a preparation for God's coming. At the Eucharist, Christians celebrate the groom's presence with them, and when they fast, they do so in their anticipation of the full joy of his return in glory.

Lord, may I too live with the joy of hope.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.
