Melchizedek was a shadowy figure we first see in Genesis. He was king of Salem (Jerusalem) and a priest "of the Most High God." He met and blessed Abraham, receiving in return one-tenth of Abraham war booty. Hebrews links him with Jesus because there is no mention Melchizedek's genealogy, so it was assumed that he had no father nor mother. Hebrews also looks to his name, which means 'king of righteousness' and his status as king of Salem, which means 'peace.' Since righteousness and peace describe Jesus, Hebrews concludes that Christ is an eternal priest like Melchizedek by divine appointment. His priesthood is defined not only by holiness, but compassion born of his own struggle and suffering.

Once more Jesus was faced with the question of whether or not to heal on the sabbath. The opposition to Jesus was increasing; the Pharisees were waiting to see what Jesus would do. Jesus often would put those wondering how he would respond to a situation on the spot. In this instance, he asked the question about doing good or harm, saving a life or killing on the sabbath. The Pharisees had no answer for that clever question. Jesus was saddened by their hardness of heart and with great compassion, he healed the man's withered hand. The Pharisees responded by going out immediately to plot against Jesus. Jesus was challenging the established way of thinking and acting. That always has consequences. Do we have the compassion and courage to put the needs of vulnerable people first as Jesus did?

Lord, help me to act with compassion and courage.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.
