Today is Ash Wednesday and is the beginning of Lent. Lent is the 40 days of intensified prayer, fasting, and the Reading of God's Word to prepare ourselves for Easter.

Today, as we begin this penitential season. We hear these words from the Lord, "...come back to Me...". Whoever we are ... wherever we are ... whatever it is ... today, we can "return to the Lord."

In life, sometimes we may feel hopeless, and the path of return does not seem to be there. What we may have are - shut doors, brokenness and silence: no welcome, no invitation, no second chance. Estranged, separated, out in the cold, there seems to be no way to return.

But today, we can return to God "with all our heart", we can return to God with "fasting, weeping, mourning". We can return because God has spoken, "Come back to Me". We can return because Christ Jesus is the sinless One; He has taken on our sins; His goodness is our goodness.

As we receive the imposition of the ashes today, let us accept it as an experiential symbol of our repentance and reconciliation. Let us receive it as our "return" to God. Let us allow God to create "a pure heart" for us and put within us "a steadfast spirit" this Lent.

Give me, Lord, a pure heart that I may see You in all things.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
We pray for women who are victims of violence, that they may be protected by society and have their sufferings considered and heeded.
