Like most other miracle stories in the New Testament, this miracle story can also serve as a parable, inviting us to reflect on our relationship with Jesus. The four men who carried their paralysed friend to bring him to Jesus are praised for their faith.

In our own lives, are we spiritually paralysed? Have we the ability to go to Jesus? Do we need some friends, spiritual guides, other fervent Catholics, the priests and perhaps others who serve your local parish to bring you to Jesus?

They may be more than willing to help you get beyond your spiritual paralysis, but in their willingness to help you develop an intimate relationship with Jesus, they may encounter many hindrances symbolised by the crowds surrounding Jesus.

In your personal life, what are the "crowds" that spiritually paralyse you? Crowds not of people, but perhaps crowds of mundane distractions, the plethora of social media, calling for our attention - the gossips, the jealousies in the workplace and other sectors of social media.

We are often in need of faithful friends to help us solve the debilitating problems that can appear as insurmountable blockages on our way to seek Jesus' healing.
