Many of the prophets were certain that even from their conception, they had been called by God. They did not have to worry about what they wanted to be when they grew up - it was already planned. God had known them and marked them out from the moment their lives began.

There were big plans for John the Baptist - not only was he to call the people back to God, but he was also to be a light to the nations, bringing salvation to the ends of the earth.

Most of us are not destined for such lofty heights, but each one of us is unique, and God eagerly waits to see how we will use our gifts for the good of others and for God's greater glory.

When the angel announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zacharias, he doubted the angel's words. For this lack of faith, his tongue was bound, rendering him mute. Only when he insisted - against the wishes of those around him - that the infant's name was John was he able to speak again. People were amazed; they praised God and wondered aloud what great things were in store for this child. John played his part beautifully and then left this world.

We all have our parts to play in the drama that is divine redemption. We should always remember, as did John, that it is all about Jesus and not about us.

Lord, may all of my labours and intentions be for Your greater glory.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
Let us pray for young people who are preparing for marriage with the support of a Christian community: may they grow in love, with generosity, faithfulness and patience.
