For the last few weeks, we have followed Jesus "resolutely on the way to Jerusalem" (cf. Luke 9:51). We have seen Jesus dealing with various questions on the Kingdom of God, its nature, its citizenship and its coming. Today's Gospel reading from Luke 17:10 is about the citizenship of the Kingdom of God.

Who are the citizens of the Kingdom of God? This section is much more than an ethical message. It is about the Christian way of life and about Jesus, his person and the Kingdom he came to proclaim. Here he shows how radical are his demands on those who choose to follow him: even when we remove the dramatic form of the words he uses, we are reminded of the first commandment, of loving God before all else.

Hence, enthusiasm is not enough. It can quickly fizzle away. Following Jesus is a demanding way of life, so we should think well before embarking on this road.

Heavenly Father, I ask for the heart of a genuine disciple of Jesus, loving him above all else.

DAILY OFFERING

Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
