We start the holy season of Advent today. The readings beckon us to be alert in waiting for the coming of the Lord. The first reading begs the Lord to return to us and save us. Such consolation to hear: "Oh, that you would tear the heavens open and come down!"

The Psalm also asks God to look upon us and have mercy as we wait patiently for him. The second reading calls us to remain steadfast in our discipleship as we wait for the return of the Lord.

And in the Gospel, Jesus warns us to be watchful. His clarion call is: "Be on your guard, stay awake because you never know when the time will come."

Staying awake can be challenging when we are tired or bored. Our life is a long vigil, waiting for the Lord to be revealed in all His glory.

So, when we wait with holy expectation and joyful hope, it will be bearable despite our tiredness. And especially when we wait for the Spirit of God to sustain us. Only the Spirit of God can help us do this faithfully.

Therefore, rather than following the Spirit of this world during this season, we follow the Spirit of God, who sustains us throughout all seasons.

Rather than lighting our houses and streets, we spiritually light our hearts for Christ to enter them. Let us prepare a manger for baby Jesus in our hearts. Indeed, waiting and staying awake is lovely because God is with us.

Dear Lord, I await with joyful anticipation of Your coming.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
We pray that people living with disabilities may be at the centre of attention in society, and that institutions may offer inclusive programmes which value their active participation.
