The first reading describes the missionary work of the apostle Philip. Although expelled from Jerusalem, he moved on to preach the Word in the city of Samaria. Historically, Samaritans were descendants of Israelites and foreigners living in Israel after most people were exiled. Therefore, the Jews despised the Samaritans as people of "mixed" or "unclean blood". In Samaria, however, Philip drew crowds through his proclamation of the Messiah.

When the Apostles in Jerusalem heard that the Samaritans had received the Word of God, they sent Peter and John there. While Peter and John were praying, the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit. The manifestation of the Holy Spirit upon the Samaritans was a sign that God was confirming the work of Philip, who, although rejected by his own people, had reached out to the Samaritans and non-Jews. It is important to note that Philip did not allow the persecution he experienced in Jerusalem to deter him from carrying out the mission entrusted by Jesus.

These days, persecution and restrictions against Christians are increasing in many parts of the world. Some of these are taking place at our own doorsteps. Do the persecutions challenge and restrict us to 'keep silent or avoid these issues'? After all, as stated in the second reading, why should we fear if we have a clear conscience about what we are doing.

Lord, help me be courageous in proclaiming my faith.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
We pray that Church movements and groups may rediscover their mission of evangelisation each day, placing their own charisms at the service of those who are in need in the world.
