Why is genealogy important? Many people engage in an exercise where they try to trace their roots as far back as they can, in a sense establishing a family tree. I can think of a few reasons. Tracing our ancestry and roots gives us a glimpse of how our ancestors lived and what legacy they have left behind. It also gives us an assurance that we did not appear out of thin air but our existence is validated by history.
The genealogy of Jesus shows us His human lineage and ancestors, and we can see that it's not entirely perfect either. We see names like David and Solomon who are not exactly models of virtue and morality. This is because we often think that Jesus had a perfect lineage, but this shows us that God can make crooked lines straight. All we need to do is to cooperate with Him and He will do the rest.
There is no perfect family tree, but that doesn't mean that we are bound by those imperfections. It is up to us to live lives that are in conformity with the will of God and live it to the fullest.
Lord God, You have graced me with my ancestry; May I be thankful to You always.
