Jesus tells His Apostles that servants are not greater than their master. This saying of Jesus follows right after the remarkable passage in which Jesus went down on His knees and washed the feet of His disciples.
We are not greater than Jesus. Humble action gives up self-glory to serve all people. We imitate the examples of Jesus our Master, to offer acts of kindness and dignified work. Jesus makes the point at this moment that there is a traitor among them. Even so, Jesus humbly served the one who would betray Him and the community.
To love and serve like Jesus is a challenge to us. It is difficult, but not impossible, in spite of our human weaknesses and limitations. Sometimes, even our highest effort is not enough. But we have to give everything we can, nonetheless. When we do that, it would no longer be us, but Christ fighting for us, pouring His abounding, ever flowing love, to others through us. In the end, we only need to trust Him.
St Paul did not preach about himself but about Jesus Christ, the promised Savior from the lips of the Prophets. If we have the love of Jesus for others in service, every opportunity to live as servants becomes a blessing for us. We recall Jesus our Master, who came to serve and not be served and to give His life as a ransom for many.
Lord, help us to conquer our fears that we will serve others as You have served us.
