An advocate is to defend a cause for another and is duty-bound to speak the truth. 'Advocate' (or 'Paraclete'), one of the many titles given to the Holy Spirit ('the Spirit of truth') is sent by the Father to abide with the disciples after Jesus withdraws His physical presence from them (Jn 15:26). This truth is His saving works wrought by the Paschal Mystery which leads to faith, freedom and peace of soul when we follow and live for Him alone. Lydia teaches us that this involves listening and believing with the heart and with faithfulness what was taught (Acts 16:14). The Spirit makes clear to the disciples the implications and fullness of Christ's message, empowers and emboldens them to speak boldly and strengthens them to endure persecution.
Every personal encounter with Jesus results in conversion and leads to transformation. Our Christian witness of a life filled with faith, hope and charity becomes a sign post pointing to Christ. Characteristics of witnessing are mentioned in the readings. The first is hospitality as Lydia invites others to stay with her. (Acts 15:16). The second is persecution, banishment and even death. (Jn 16:2). Indeed, martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith.
On what evidence can others convict us for living a life of respect and reverence? How much risk and losses would we accept as witnesses for Christ's sake?
O Holy Spirit, grant that I may give a good account of my faith by the example of my life. Amen.
