God is very different from humans. Once God promises something, He does not go back on His word. God can always be trusted, even when we are suffering the consequences of our sins. God does not abandon us. Paul was writing about Israel, and how the promises God made to Israel are irrevocable. This phrase was repeated in several papal documents and by St John Paul II during a visit to a synagogue. The Jewish people have not been abandoned – they are still very dear to God. And the same goes for us – God does not abandon us when we make mistakes – even disastrous ones – but works even harder to return us to the path of the Kingdom.

Often social gatherings are places where people try to impress others or to advance their own interests. Those at parties and dinners are sized up by others – how wealthy are they? What about their religion and politics? What advantage is there in knowing this person? The advice of Jesus was simple: opt out of that game. Invite the poor, the lonely, those who never get an invitation, those who are of no advantage to you. You will make their day. And do this for no other reason than that it is a kind and loving thing to do.

Lord, help me to deal kindly with others.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day jul be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
