The parable features a totally corrupt judge, who fears neither God nor man. It also features a widow, probably the most powerless, marginalised and poor. As far as a corrupt judge is concerned, she can be ignored. But this widow is different - she is persistent and will not give up.

The judge was meant to look after the widows and the orphans - this was part of his role in the society of Jesus' time. The woman had to overcome the judge's reluctance to help. Sometimes it does seem to us that God is reluctant to answer our prayers. Jesus does not say that people always ought to pray and not lose heart because God is reluctant, but because He isn't, and that is our encouragement to prayer. God answers in His own time, perfect and loving, regardless of how impatient and frustrated we become.

Jesus highlights the parable with a warning regarding the future. Not only will some lose heart and cease praying to the Lord, there will also be those who have turned away from the Lord altogether by the time of His return. Persistent prayer and faith go together. God wants us to pray continually because doing so keeps us in touch with Him. There is nothing more important.
