The dating of this memorial is ancient, originating in the Eastern Church. It commemorates the dedication of the Basilica of St Mary, built next to the Temple in Jerusalem, on 21 November 543. It was later established as a feast in the universal Roman Catholic Church in the 15th century. It recalls Mary's "dedication" or consecration of herself to God from her infancy, just like the dedication of this basilica. Tradition holds that she was presented in the Temple as a child - offered to God in anticipation of her unique role in salvation history. This act prefigures her lifelong "yes" to God, culminating in her acceptance to bear the Saviour.
Jesus redefines family not by blood, but by obedience to the Will of God. Mary exemplifies this perfectly - not only as His mother, but as the first and most faithful disciple, one who listens and responds to God's call with total trust.
In Zechariah, we hear the Lord calling Zion to rejoice, for He is coming to dwell among His people. This prophecy finds a quiet fulfilment in Mary, the new Zion, in whose womb God takes up His dwelling. She is the living temple of the Lord.
Like Mary, we are invited to present ourselves fully to God - heart, mind, and will. Let our daily "yes" be a quiet offering of love and obedience.
Hail Mary, help us to say "yes" to God daily.
