The end of this liturgical year, which takes its readings from Luke 21, feature betrayals, persecutions and natural catastrophes; ominous signs that foretell end times. Troubled by Christ's graphic descriptions, His disciples asked: When? What should we watch for? How will we know? Jesus responds by providing them with a framework for preparation instead of speculation.

"...and that will be your opportunity to bear witness" (Lk 21:13). In Christianity, 'martyr' from the Greek word 'witness' or 'testimony' refers to believers who shed their blood for the truth of the faith. However, there is a dying that isn't physical; one that involves 'dying to self' and choosing intentionally to live according to Gospel values. People with same sex attraction who choose to live chastely often suffer rebuff and rejection from family and friends. Living with the mentally-challenged, infirmed and disabled and/or caring for them requires heroic sacrifices – emotional, physical and financial. But endurance is not passive acceptance but stems from a hopeful and active patience. The universal call to holiness entails taking up our daily crosses and bearing it with hope, joy and peace. Where does this strength and endurance come from? Jesus offers this assurance to us: "I myself shall give you an eloquence and a wisdom..." (Lk 21:15). Through our 'daily deaths' to self, we are working out our salvation and helping others do theirs too.
