During Lent, we are especially encouraged to do good and seek justice. Yet, why is this? In fact, why should we do good at all?

In the end, Jesus says, we will be judged according to the way we have lived. If we wish to have eternal life, we are called to do good now. Jesus also tells us that when we love other people, especially people in need, we love Jesus himself. As difficult as it may sometimes be, when we are compassionate to others, we are compassionate to Christ.

The writer of Leviticus describes the ten commandments, but first, he steps back and looks at the context of these words. We are called to do good and be holy because God is holy-this is God's very nature. Not stealing, not holding a grudge, dealing honestly with others and seeking justice are all ways of growing in holiness. When we live in this way, we imitate the One who created us. When we live in this way, we live out who we are called to be.

Being honest, being just and responding to the needs of others is not easy. Christ knows this. Let us ask for his help this Lent as we seek to more fully live out our identity.
