'Friend' is a very carelessly used word. Sirach teaches us the difference between those who are acquaintances, companions, and self-seekers and those who are genuine friends. A real friend is one who stands by you even when all others run away. This person is encouraging and supportive but also tells you the truth and challenges you. And this friend is a person of integrity, kindness, and constancy. There is a saying to the effect that no one who has real friends can be called a failure. Do you have anyone who can be called a genuine friend? Are you such a friend for another?

The teaching on divorce is tough but it was not intended to lay painful burdens on people or to keep them trapped in abusive or dangerous relationships. It is intended as an ideal or goal. This was given in a time and culture when divorce was all too easy - for the man - and often carried out in a manner that tossed women aside like worn-out clothing. The woman who was dismissed was often poor and vulnerable. Jesus proclaimed the sanctity of marriage - it is not a casual business arrangement - and the importance of all parties being protected. We should treat marriage and spouses as gifts from God and not take anything for granted. Men and women should treat one another in a manner that gives joy to the other and honour to God.

Lord, may I be a true friend to others.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
