The Gospel of John contains many surprises and challenges. Jesus made some stunning promises to the disciples before his passion. They would be able to do even greater things than he had done - but only when his mission was complete. When we get caught in our own limitations and are feeling helpless we should remember this - but it only works if we abide in Jesus. Abiding in him means living a life of love and service and allowing the Spirit into our heart. Jesus also assured the disciples that to see him is to see the Father. This does not mean physical resemblance, but an awareness of what God is like. In his letters, John tells us what God is like - God is love and light. Jesus revealed in human terms the nature of God. So it is with us - as his followers, we are given the mission of revealing God to others. This is not in words but deeds and attitudes. When people encounter us, they should have some idea of what God is like. Quite a mission! Fortunately, we have the Spirit to help us. Finally, Jesus insists that he is the 'way, truth, and the life' and that access to God the Father is through him. That does not mean that non-Christians are excluded from God's love. It means that the person and life of Jesus is the pattern or model for all humanity, and it is defined by humility, love, mercy, and obedience to the will of God. That is the way and the truth for all people. Our mission each day is to reveal God - even imperfectly - by our words, actions, and thoughts.

Lord, may I be an instrument of Your love.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
