Jeremiah was a reluctant prophet. He did not want the role of prophet; he protested that he was unable to do the job; and at one point in his ministry, he even tried to quit. But he continued on, for he could do no other. The fire of the word of God burned within him. At this point in the story, there was a plot to murder him because he proclaimed the unpleasant truth to the high and mighty. His protection was in the Lord, however, so the plot failed. We all need the courage and commitment to persevere in our efforts, even when it is tough going and we encounter opposition. If our efforts are from God, we will prevail.

The sons of Zebedee were anxious to get ahead of the others. They wanted the seats of honor, next to Jesus, when he entered into his kingdom. This is a typical human response, for people are always trying to jostle ahead of others. Jesus had to teach them the way of God. True greatness and honor is demonstrated by humble, loving service and willingness to suffer for the sake of others. His approaching passion in Jerusalem was the perfect example of this selfless love in action. One must become empty of selfishness to be truly great and holy, and that is the goal we should set before ourselves. Let us avoid playing the world's game of 'getting ahead.'

Lord, help me to be humble.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
