David wanted to build a house - a temple - for God, but God was not interested. God denied any need for a house to live in, and pointed out that He had always provided for the Israelites. God needed no help. But God went on to promise David perpetual care. God would always ensure that one of David's descendants would sit on the throne of Israel. Scripture tells us that many of David's descendants were unworthy kings, who brought disaster on the land. People are not always faithful, but God always is, and we can rely on that.

Joseph was understandably upset when he discovered that Mary was with child. Even in his shock and disappointment, he wanted to be compassionate and just, so he was going to send her away quietly. When the angel of the Lord reassured him in a dream and told him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, that was all he needed. He asked no questions; he rose and did exactly as he had been told. This is the mark of a person of faith - willing to do what God asks without having all the answers or the 'big picture.' It is not only a mark of faith, but of absolute trust. We can follow Joseph's example and be willing to serve God without reservations, doubts, and fears. God relies on such people - let us strive to be one of them.

Lord, help me to serve you without fear or reservation.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
