Paul's letters were always pastoral - he wanted to give hope and strength to his followers. Many were worried and losing hope because the Lord had not returned. What would happen to family and friends who had already died? Would they be excluded? Paul reassured them with vivid images that God does not forget or leave anyone behind. Both the living and the dead will be raised to live with the Lord. Do we ever feel that the Lord has left us behind? He has promised us that we will be - and we already are - with him forever.

Jesus read from Isaiah's prophecy and then proclaimed that he personally fulfilled the prophecy. His ministry would be about hope for all who suffered or struggled. Not only that, he would reach across traditional boundaries to include everyone - sinners and gentiles alike. This did not please his audience - like most religious people everywhere, they thought they 'owned' God and that God's favour was just for them. Jesus challenges us to have an open mind and a very big heart. We should rejoice that God shows favour and mercy to those outside - how great is our God! This was the message of Jesus, and it is the consistent message of Pope Francis. Let us ensure that our God is not too small!

Lord, open my heart and mind.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That our parishes, animated by a missionary spirit, may be places where faith is communicated and charity is seen.
