The first thought of the Israelites when they returned from Babylon was to rebuild their homes and their way of life. Somewhere in the process they forgot about God's Temple! Too expensive, too much work! God had to remind the people through the prophet that He expected them to respond to the profound graces they had received with gratitude, and this would be expressed in a new and glorious temple. Sometimes our obligations to God slip into the background - we get too caught up in many things. Let us remember how much we have to be grateful for.

Herod was frightened out of his wits. Wonderful, miraculous things were occurring. Who was doing them? Was it Elijah or one of the prophets come back to life? Was it John the Baptist, whom Herod had beheaded? Tyrants, the powers of the world, and other fearful people often attempt to snuff out the light. They persecute and kill, hoping to retain control over others. But God always triumphs, and if God is blocked in one way, He will try another. We need not be overwhelmed by the negativity, suffering, and evil in the world. God's light cannot be smothered, nor can ideas that proclaim justice, compassion, equality, and love be destroyed. Darkness seems all-powerful, but its days are always numbered. May our lives always bear witness to the light and continue God's holy work.

Lord, may I always bear witness to God's light.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That our parishes, animated by a missionary spirit, may be places where faith is communicated and charity is seen.
