At Christmas, we are drawn to the nativity scene where the infant Jesus' parents, wise men and shepherds pay homage to this new-born King; some of them, on bended knees.
In the Hymn of Christ from Philippians 2, we discover Jesus, Who not only became man but took on the nature of a slave. As a slave, He gave His life to the service of other people. He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world, as acclaimed by John the Baptist in today's Gospel. Jesus is the Chosen One of God. John also witnessed the Holy Spirit coming down and resting upon Him. With this strength, Jesus was able to make His way to Calvary, faced with humiliation and the pain of crucifixion. He accepted the cross from which He hung and died for us. For this obedient sacrifice, God gave Jesus the highest honour in the name "Lord of the universe." To His Most Holy Name then, we come on bended knee, just like the visitors at the manger.
How does the passion of our Lord move me to greater reverence for the name of Jesus? Do I pray on bended knees? Like Jesus, do I make myself a slave of service to others?
Lord Jesus, in Your Most Holy Name may we love all people entrusted to our care.
