In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus' public ministry begins on a two-point imperative: repentance and kingdom of heaven. Translated from the Greek word 'metanoia,' repentance involves a radical change in one's thinking, resulting in a complete change of direction in one's life. Repentance is not an emotion, but an inward decision that impels us to abandon our sinful lives, make a right-about turn to a life of ongoing conversion and holiness. We can feel remorse and do our penances without reorienting ourselves. True repentance requires both a change in our mind and our course. The parable of the prodigal's son best illustrates this. After acknowledging his sinful excesses, the prodigal son made a decision, "I will arise and go to my father…" (Lk 15:18), and he returned to his father and home (Lk 15:20). The 'kingdom of heaven' refers to God's reign over creation; it is both a present reality and a future hope for believers. Jesus came to perfect the Law. In pointing to the nearness of the kingdom, Jesus is alluding to Himself as the living embodiment of peace, love, forgiveness and justice. The kingdom is the intimate communion of Him with His followers, the fruit of an overflowing love of Him. If we live in a loving relationship with Him and let Him rule over our

lives, these values will be brought to bear within us.
