Both, the first and Gospel readings today emphasise that spiritual growth is an ongoing journey of experiencing and accepting God's love, which in turn gives us the courage and resilience to face our own internal and external 'storms' that happen in our lives.

In the first reading, St John reminds us of the primacy of God's love. God's love, that dwells in us through the Spirit, inspires reciprocal love among believers. Our Christian living should express in words and deeds our genuine love and concern for people and the whole of creation, especially for the poor and marginalised in society and care of our common home. Through our actions, motivated by sincere love, it becomes evident that God, Who is love, is genuinely present within us and visible to the world. The love we receive from God transforms our lives and the lives of others by passing it on.

This love results in confidence and freedom from fear. Love and fear do not co-exist. In the Gospel reading, Jesus tells the disciples, who are terrified at the sight of Him walking on the water over the stormy sea: Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid. Thus, Jesus demonstrates God's power and, through His presence, casts out their fear. God's presence is the source of courage and love, transcends our human weaknesses and struggles. When we face real troubles and difficulties in life, let our prayer be:
