When this incident in the cave happened, David and Saul were no longer friendly - Saul was pursuing David in order to kill him. David had the opportunity to end Saul's life and to become king; however, David showed respect for the fact that Saul was the Lord's anointed and only cut off a corner of his garment. But David even regretted doing that, because to show disrespect for the Lord's anointed was also to show disrespect for the Lord. David protected Saul's safety because he would not lift his hand against the anointed of the Lord.

If David can show such great respect for God's anointed even though Saul was cruel, what more the chosen ones of Jesus. It was on a mountain that Jesus appointed the twelve and called them Apostles. In the Bible, a mountain signifies a site of divine revelation or encounter with God. The Apostles learned that they were expected to carry out Jesus' ministry of preaching and healing. Imagine how the Apostles felt when Jesus chose them and told them that they were to continue His ministry, in spite of their many limitations! Yet this is what we are called to do today - to share the Good News of the love of Jesus for all even when we don't feel worthy. We do this in many different ways, but each action is motivated by the love of God.

Lord, help me to minister to Your people.
