The followers of Jesus were first called 'Christians' at Antioch. It was not a title they took for themselves - it was given to them by others in recognition of the fact that they were followers of Christ. And it was not for theological reasons, but because people saw in these followers some of the qualities of Jesus the Christ. Many had been moved by the simple goodness, passion, and spirituality of Barnabas and later Paul. Arguments and apologetics seldom convince anyone of the truth of Christianity. Most often it is the example of a kind, loving, generous, and just person that makes the difference. We should never underestimate our own influence. Our smallest actions each day can make a tremendous difference in the lives of others and in the life of the Church. Being a good witness means providing others with the good example of a follower of Jesus.

The bystanders in John's story are waiting anxiously for Jesus to declare himself the Messiah. They want proof and official confirmation. Jesus refuses, telling them to just open their eyes and their hearts. They have seen the works that he has done and these speak for themselves. We need to listen with the heart, and follow the gentle pull of the words of Jesus, both those spoken and those reflected in the lives of others.

Lord, help me to reveal You in my words and deeds.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That allowing himself to be enlightened and guided by the Holy Spirit, every Christian may answer enthusiastically and faithfully to the universal call to sanctity.
